If you want you can always reduce the amount of food coloring. These cupcakes are usually moist and dense. Most recipes for red velvet cupcakes require at least two tablespoons of red food colouring. This is the ingredient that brings out that deep red color in the cupcakes. Red velvet cupcakes also require buttermilk. However, if you do not have buttermilk you can simply add one tablespoon of vinegar to milk and leave it to stand for about five minutes. After that you can add it to the rest of the ingredients to make the batter.
